D I S K O V E R Y : THE END OF THE ROAD?
by Fender Tucker
About ten years ago I proposed to Al Vekovius, boss man at Softdisk,
that we start a new magazine devoted to the C-128. I had been editing
LOADSTAR for a year and was getting tired of rejecting big 128-mode
programs just because there wasn't room for them on the monthly disks.
And so LOADSTAR 128 was born. Within a year we had about 2000
subscribers and I got an award from Softdisk for the idea. Times were good.
The more powerful BASIC and the bigger screen were inspiring to
programmers, especially those with hyperactive ambitions, and with four
assistants (Jeff Jones, Scott Resh, Mike Maynard and Jim Row) it was pretty
easy for me to check out all of the dozens of submissions and pick only the
very best for publication. The quarters rolled by and the issue numbers
crept into double digits.
But it couldn't last.
First to go were the assistants. Before long it was down to Jeff and
me, and since Jeff was so busy with the 64 magazine, LOADSTAR 128 rested on
my shoulders. As long as there were good and plentiful submissions
everything was okay. But then around issue #30 the submissions dropped off.
The ambitious guys were all lured into the PC trap and I found that the
only way to fill an issue was to write 80-column programs of my own.
The last to go were the subscribers. We're down to about 300
subscribers, which is still a respectable number, but there just isn't
enough activity in the 128 field to inspire the programmers.
There will be a LOADSTAR #42, and I hope to have it in your hands
before the end of the year, but it may be the last LOADSTAR 128. We haven't
accepted any subscription money beyond #42 for over a year so if we end it
at #42 there won't be many people with issues owed them.
If only Commodore had...
If only I had...
